In 2021 I did a ‘trails guide backup course’ with Ecotraining in South Africa.
While walking through the bush and learning about the animals their trails and all the other qualities of the bushveld, I fell in love with the language of my fellow students; Afrikaans.
How did the South Africans preserve their language so well and did we, Dutch people, make it so complicated and mixed up with other languages?
When I came back to work, one of my first students was from South Africa. Suddenly I was much more able to understand his struggles and explain the differences and why there is a difference. ‘Create logic in the madness’ sort of speak.
He gave me my first referral for another South African student and now 70% of my students are from South Africa. I specialized in helping students who also spoke Afrikaans and I started learning Afrikaans myself.
I developed a teaching method for South African students that focuses on their specific needs (more speaking, grammar, and spelling, less vocabulary reading and listening).
The 6-day intensive course for South Africans also works on self-confidence in speaking and creating different ‘folders’ in your brain, to not mix up the different languages whilst using them.
If you are interested in private classes, classes with your partner or family, or the 6-day intensive course; please contact me via the contact page. We can make a free online appointment to discuss your specific wishes or needs and make a plan.
